I was David Lynch's new cameraman. We showed up on location to shoot without actors or anything except the camera. He pointed at this long hallway and said "I want you to film that". I started filming this long slow shot backing up down this absurdly long hallway. people started to enter frame (actors) and say things (lines) to one another. then lynch said cut.

I turned to him and said I'd figured him out. He said "How's that?"

"All your movies are just documentaries about other dimensions."

He smiled.
